Lesson 13 / 25
The Limits of Symbolic AI
Why hand-written knowledge struggles.
Brittleness and the knowledge bottleneck
Symbolic systems are precise and explainable, but brittle: they fail on situations their rules did not anticipate, and real-world knowledge is enormous, vague and full of exceptions. Writing and maintaining rules is the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Perception (recognising a face or a spoken word) is especially hard to capture in rules. These limits drove the shift to probabilistic and learning methods, while symbolic reasoning survives where precision, auditability and hard constraints matter, often combined with learned components.
A rulebook versus experience
A new employee with a thick rulebook handles common cases but freezes on unusual ones; an experienced colleague generalises from many examples but cannot always explain why.
Combine rules with learning
Use learned models for fuzzy perception and rules for hard business or safety constraints on top of them.
Quick check: What is the knowledge acquisition bottleneck?
- A shortage of GPUs
- The difficulty of writing and maintaining enough explicit rules
- Slow internet
- Too many training examples
Answer
The difficulty of writing and maintaining enough explicit rules — Encoding knowledge by hand does not scale.
