Remote Delivery and Communication
Being clear on a video call.
Setting up to communicate well
Many behavioural interviews happen over video. Test your camera, microphone and connection beforehand, use the meeting tool the company specified, and have a quiet space with your face clearly lit. Look at the camera when making key points, speak a little slower than usual, and pause so the interviewer can interject despite audio delay. Keep a short note of story titles nearby if allowed, but do not read scripts; interviewers usually notice. Communication style varies across cultures and individuals, and interviewers should focus on content; clarity, structure and listening matter far more than perfect eye contact or polished delivery. If you need an accommodation, ask the recruiter in advance.
Practise until it feels like conversation
Preparation turns into performance through practice, feedback and a calm plan for surprises.
Pre-call checklist
Run through it 15 minutes before.
[ ] Laptop charged / plugged in; notifications silenced
[ ] Correct meeting link and tool installed; joined test call earlier
[ ] Camera at eye level; light in front of me, not behind
[ ] Headphones or a mic checked for echo
[ ] Water nearby; door closed; others know I am busy
[ ] One-page list of story titles + questions to ask (if allowed)
[ ] Recruiter phone number in case the call dropsIf the connection fails
Stay calm, rejoin, and if needed contact the recruiter. Technical issues happen; how you handle them is more memorable than the glitch.
