Mid-Level, Senior and Staff Engineers

Scope, influence and cross-team impact.

Showing scope that matches the level

As levels rise, interviewers listen for scope (a feature, a system, a product area, an organisation-wide concern), influence (who changed their behaviour because of you), ambiguity (problems you defined, not just solved) and multiplying others (mentoring, raising standards, unblocking teams). Mid-level answers often centre on owning features end to end. Senior answers should include technical direction, cross-team coordination and trade-offs with business impact. Staff-level stories often involve identifying an important problem nobody owned, aligning several teams over months, and leaving durable mechanisms such as standards or platforms. Pick stories from your strongest recent work, and be ready for deep follow-ups on technical decisions.

Same theme, growing scope

How a "reliability" story might look at different levels (illustrative).

Mid-level "I added alerting and a runbook for the service I owned and
cut repeated pages for my team."
Senior "I led a reliability push across our three services: defined
SLOs with product, prioritised the top failure modes and
coordinated fixes with two other teams."
Staff "I saw that incidents across the org had no shared practice. I
proposed an incident process, piloted it with two groups,
iterated, and it became the default for engineering."

Make the business link explicit

Senior candidates should connect technical work to outcomes such as customer experience, cost, risk or speed of other teams, stated honestly.
