The Profile README

A short introduction at the top of your profile.

A special repository

GitHub shows a profile README on your profile page when you create a public repository whose name matches your username and add a README.md to it (check GitHub's documentation for current details). Use it as a short, friendly introduction: who you are, what you work on, two or three projects worth opening, and how to reach you. Keep it brief and current. Large animated banners, many auto-generated stat widgets and long lists of technology logos add noise and rarely help a reviewer; a few clear sentences and links usually do more.

A front page for your code

Your GitHub profile is often the first place a reviewer goes to see how you actually work.

Three ideas: the profile README, pinned repositories, and what the contribution graph does and does not show.

A concise profile README

Fictional person and projects.

Update it when you update your resume

Make it part of your routine: whenever the resume changes, check that the profile README points to the same projects and says the same things.

त्वरित जाँच: What makes a profile README most useful to a reviewer?

  • As many stat widgets and logos as possible
  • A brief introduction with links to a few projects worth opening
  • A full copy of your resume
  • An empty file so the page loads quickly
Answer

A brief introduction with links to a few projects worth opening — Short and pointed helps the reader.
